What to Wear for Indoor Maternity & Newborn PortraitsBy Jennifer Ubinas Photography
One of the most common questions I hear from clients is:"What should I wear for my maternity or newborn session?"
Choosing the right outfits makes a huge difference in how your portraits look and feel. As a South Florida studio photographer, I’m here to help you feel confident and prepared.
Here’s my go-to guide for selecting outfits that photograph beautifully.

✨ For Maternity Portraits
Maternity sessions are all about celebrating the beauty of pregnancy.
✅ Keep It SimpleSolid colors and soft neutrals work best. Avoid busy patterns or loud prints, which can distract from your bump and expressions.
✅ Choose Dresses That Highlight Your ShapeFlowy gowns that gather under the bust or fitted dresses that hug your curves are always flattering.
✅ Bring OptionsI recommend 2–3 looks:
A form-fitting dress to accentuate your belly
A soft, draped gown for an ethereal look
A casual outfit like a knit sweater and leggings for variety
✅ Borrow from My Client ClosetI provide a carefully curated wardrobe of maternity gowns and fabrics in timeless tones—so you don’t have to shop if you don’t want to.
✨ For Newborn Portraits
Newborn sessions focus on your baby—but your clothing plays an important supporting role.
✅ Parents & SiblingsStick with light, neutral colors: creams, beiges, soft pastels, or muted earth tones. This creates a clean, cohesive look and keeps the attention on your baby.
✅ Avoid Logos and Distracting PatternsSimple is always best.
✅ Dress for ComfortSessions can take 2–3 hours, and we keep the studio warm for baby’s comfort. Lightweight layers are ideal.
✅ Outfits for BabyLess is more! I provide all wraps, swaddles, and simple accessories. You’re welcome to bring one special outfit or keepsake if you’d like, but most of the session will be baby in wraps or bare skin.
✨ Why Neutrals Photograph Best
Neutral palettes:
Complement every skin tone
Feel timeless (not trendy)
Help create a soft, peaceful mood
Look beautiful in both color and black & white edits

🧡 A Note About Hair & Makeup
Professional hair and makeup can make you feel polished and relaxed—especially for maternity portraits. If you’d like recommendations for trusted local artists, I’m happy to share referrals.
